Lesson Nine

Objective: Students will use simple strategies to determine meaning and increase vocabulary for reading including the use of multiple meaning.

Materials:

*  Book:  Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary

*  white piece of paper

Book Review Worksheet

*  computer

Vocabulary: dismal, ceaseless, mute, genuine, obedient, feeble

Working with words: The teacher will introduce plural and irregular nouns by writing samples on the board, then monitor as students make a list plural and irregular nouns they find in chapter nine.  Students will go to Fact Monster and complete activities on plural and irregular nouns.

Activity: The teacher will...

1. begin lesson by having the students share their prediction of chapter nine

2. have the students answer the following sentence in their journal: Rainy days can be great or gloomy. Describe your ideal rainy day. (5 minutes)

3. chose 2-3 students to read their journal aloud

4. review vocabulary words and definitions from chapter eight

5. introduce new vocabulary words and definitions for chapter nine

6. give each student a white piece of paper, and have them fold it into six pieces - students can also use word processing to create a table with two columns and three rows for boxes, then type and add graphics

7. have students write each vocabulary word, definition and illustration in each box

8. read and discuss chapter nine

9. as a class make a list of things they might do on a rainy day 

10. open draw application of word processing

11. using text box, have students type one rainy day activity

12. using draw tools, illustrate activity

13. edit

14. print and share 

Evaluation: Students will add to "The Good and the Bad" chart, complete a book review on Ramona Quimby, Age 8, draw a book cover for their book and answer the following questions:

Do you agree that the Quimbys are a nice family? Find proof in the

story.

Do you think that Mrs. Quimby was right to forbid Beezus from

attending the sleep-over? Give at least two reasons for your answer.

Why do you think Mr. Quimby insists that his family go out for dinner

with all their money problems?

Extension Activity: Word Story

Students brainstorm a short story.
Choose a few important words and erase them.
Decide whether the missing word is a noun, verb, adjective or adverb.
Parts of speech:
Noun- a person, place or thing
Verb- an action word
Adverb- describes verbs and how, when or where
Adjective- describes nouns
Type the story, including blank lines on computer.
Double space.
Below each work, type what part of speech the missing word is.
Add graphics and clip art.
Print out
Fill in the blanks by having students raise hand for answers.

Example:

Mary was walking to a store one day to buy some ___________ (s) when 
                                                                                          noun

she _______________ into a yellow ___________________.
          verb                                           noun

Publish story online at Kid Authors.

Home Learning: Have students use draw tool to write another rainy day (or a sunny or snowy day) activity using text box, then use draw tools to illustrate. Save to disk and print in school.
