Lesson Seven

Objective: Students will be able to plan, write and publish a book report.

Materials:

*  Book:  Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary

*  white piece of paper

*  computer

Vocabulary: glad, indignant, bored, grouchy, comforting, grim, cranky, funny, delighted, amused

Working with words: The teacher will introduce how to use punctuation marks by writing samples on the board, then monitor as students make a list of punctuation marks they find in chapter seven.  Students will go to Student Fun to learn more information about punctuation marks.

Activity: The teacher will...

1. begin lesson by having the students share their prediction of chapter seven

2. have the students answer the following questions in their computer journal: What happens when you get sick at home? and Does your family do anything special? (5 minutes)

3. chose 2-3 students to read their journal aloud

4. review vocabulary words and definitions from chapter six

5. introduce new vocabulary words and definitions for chapter seven

6. give each student a white piece of paper, and have them fold it into ten pieces-  students can also use word processing to create a table with two columns and five rows for boxes, then type and add graphics

7. have students write each vocabulary word, definition and illustration in each box

8. read and discuss chapter seven

9. talk about different ways to do book reports- diorama, multimedia presentation, tell story in series of letters or postcards, make a shape book of the story, create a model of the story, illustrate the story with art work; assign one for homework. Give students at least one week to produce book report.

10. have the students go to Education World to get ideas on how to publish different book reports

Extended Activities:  Role Play
Break students into groups of two or three.
Have the students review their favorite TV commercials.
Discuss what makes them their favorite- music, words, action, funny, silly, location, actors.
Students then plan and write text for their favorite TV commercial. 
Role play their favorite TV commercial for the class.

Evaluation: Students will add to "The Good and the Bad" chart and answer the following questions:

Describe Ramona as a patient.

How does Ramona feel about her mother staying home with her when she

was sick?

Why is Ramona pleased about the letters Sara brings to her?
