Lesson Four

Objective: Students will understand the development of plot and how conflicts are resolved in a story.

Materials:

*  Book:  Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary

*  white piece of paper

*  worksheet (following directions)

*  peanut butter

*  bread

*  plastic knife

*  computer

Vocabulary: contended, cross, emerge, flip, frown, innocent, knock, slender, sulky, suppressed, quarrel

Working with words: The teacher will introduce pronouns by writing samples on the board, then monitor as students make a list of pronouns they find in chapter four.  Students will go to Quizzes- Pronouns and complete activities on pronouns.

Activity: The teacher will...

1. begin lesson by having the students share their prediction of chapter four

2. review vocabulary words and definitions from chapter three

3. introduce new vocabulary words and definitions for chapter four

4. give each student a white piece of paper, and have them fold it into ten pieces-  students can also use word processing to create a table with two columns and five rows for boxes, then type and add graphics

5. have students write each vocabulary word, definition and illustration in each box

6. have the students write the directions for making a peanut butter sandwich. Demonstrate the written directions. Have the entire class write the correct directions and place into a Flow Chart. Eat the peanut butter sandwiches.

7. read and discuss chapter four

Evaluation: Students will add to "The Good and the Bad" chart and answer the following questions:

Why were the girl’s upset about their meal?

Do you think the punishment that the Quimby's gave the girls was

fair? Why or why not?

How do the girls think they can "escape punishment?"

Home Learning: Students will write a NAME poem about themselves. Write a prediction for chapter five.
