COMPONENT: Reads, identifies, and understands key vocabulary words.
OBJECTIVES: To build a background working vocabulary and be able to apply it for research purposes.
MATERIALS: computer, dictionary, online genealogy dictionary, paper and pencil
PROCEDURE: Students will copy the following words from
the board:
genealogy, pedigree, immigration, emigration, lineage, probate, will,
ancestor, archives, census, circa, deed, surname. They will then search for the
definitions using an online genealogical dictionary.
Review the words out loud with the entire class so as to ensure the proper
context.
Make word wall of vocabulary words using
computer to type words.
Change font, style, size and color or words.
Add clip art to help show meaning.
Find other words online that relate to
genealogy. Visit Genealogy

Web.
EVALUATION: The students will use the words in sentences,
showing the proper context.

HOMEWORK: Find the above vocabulary words by using a search engine such as Alta Vista. Write the corresponding web site that is found. Share websites in class.
EXTENSION ACTIVITY: Family Atlas
Use information from family geography lesson to create a family atlas
Explain to students that an atlas is a collection of maps
Students can organize information in several
ways: alphabetically- by the name of the town, village or city; by location-
continent, country or state; or by time period- list by birth
dates of family members
Have students create one page for each of the birthplaces of family members
Research country, town or community using an Online Encyclopedia, geography CD-ROM, and atlas
Write a short article about the place or about a member of the family who lived there
Insert graphics or scan in photos
Insert map of each location, hand drawn or copy and paste from Africa, Asia and Middle East, Europe, USA
