NUMBERING SYSTEM
y = 3x - 8
COMPONENT: Algebraic Thinking
OBJECTIVES: The student generalizes a pattern, relation, or function to explain how a change in one quantity results in a change in another.
MATERIALS: blank pedigree chart, either online or paper, calculator, (or computer calculator)
PROCEDURES: Student will begin to fill in pedigree chart
(see link) Pedigree Chart
with his/her name, using the number one. His father is placed in appropriate
slot and given the number
2. His father's father is placed and is given the
number
3. His father's mother is given the number
4. Each wife of each
generation progresses by one number. The student then places his
mother using the number
5. Complete the chart by deciphering the pattern for two
generations, three generations and four generations.
6. Look for the
mathematical pattern that is forming.
7. Use a computer or online calculator to
find the numerical pattern.
EVALUATION: The student will describe and explain the progressive pattern stating how many numbers are added for each generation.
HOMEWORK: Complete ten pattern problems describing the progression.
TIPS: Each person named in the tree will use his/her corresponding number in the family history book.
EXTENSION ACTIVITY: Timeline
Discuss what a timeline is- a basic tool used by historians; it is like a long string that connects the past to the present; it lists events in chronological order (from events that happened long ago to the present)
Timelines are useful for remembering and making connections between events and it is a great organizational tool
Have students brainstorm the events to be included in their timeline: births, deaths, marriages, moving to another location to live, changing schools, starting of Kindergarten or nursery school, starting of elementary school, inventions, beginning and ending of wars, scientific discoveries, publications of works of art, musical happenings and so on...
Use a timeline from a CD encyclopedia, such as Encarta, or an online encyclopedia, Encylopedia.com, to review timelines of the past 10-15 years for students to discover events occurring during their lifetimes
Use information to create a personal or family timeline draft
Use desktop publishing tools to create a heading for the timeline, create a line, enter dates, enter events and enter graphics, digital photo of student can be scanned and inserted
