COMPONENT: Composition
OBJECTIVE: To write in a variety of modes. To learn to write captions.
MATERIALS: scanner, computer, photos
PROCEDURE: Students will borrow photos from family members to be incorporated into their family group sheets.
Practice writing captions under each photo. Each caption should furnish some information about the people in the photo. Ask various relatives questions pertaining to the family members. Students will use desktop publishing software to publish information.
Scanning:
Place photos in upper right hand corner of scanner.
Press scanning button the scanner.
Scan it to Microsoft Works or other similar
software. Press "accept."
Type in caption under picture.
Save picture
on hard drive or disk.
Open family group sheet page.
Then open photo.
Change the
size of the photo by holding the left mouse button on the sides of the picture.
Remember to save changes.
EVALUATION: Students will continue to place photos in the family album and add anecdotal captions for each person.
TIPS: Captions should be brief and to the point.
EXTENSION ACTIVITY: Creative Writing
Each student will look at an old photo found in a magazine, newspaper or online
Student may also use an actual picture
Brainstorm about who the person or people could be; where was the pictures taken; when; and what were the people doing before, during and after the picture was taken
Notice what they are wearing, time of day and surroundings
Write a draft of a story about the person or people in the picture
Edit, rewrite, proofread with a buddy and spell check
Clip art and word art can be inserted
Publish stories
Read them aloud
Stories can also be uploaded to class Web site or posted on the Kid Authors
