Sense of Taste

 

Objective:

·        The student will use his/her sense of taste to determine which food taste sweet, sour, salty and bitter.

·        The student will determine which part of the tongue was used for each of the four tastes.

·        The student will be able to state the body parts used for taste.

 

Materials:

v    Poster of tongue and the four areas for taste (sweet, sour, bitter, and salty)

v    Marshmallows

v    Pretzels

v    Sour patch kids

v    Unsweetened chocolate (VERY SMALL PIECE) 

v    Taste test activity 

v Teachers can get information about the sense of   
  taste at Kids Health/ Sense of Taste

 

Activities:

1.      Show students tongue poster.

2.    Have students guess which of the five sense uses the tongue.

3.    Introduce the areas of the tongue and what each tastes.

4.    Pass out activity page and plates with each of the four foods.

5.    Tell students to start with marshmallow and ask which of the four tastes it will fall under. 

6.    Have them taste and draw a picture in the correct place.

7.    Continue with the three following foods.

8.    Have students get a drink of water after bitter chocolate.

 

Evaluation:

ü     Have students name one of the different tastes.

ü     Have students name one way they use their sense of taste everyday.

ü    Have students tell which was their favorite type of taste.

Extension:

Have students write a creative story about the sense of taste. Here are some examples of story starters: When I got home from school yesterday, my Mother was busy cooking a new type of food, it tasted like ........., At the birthday party on Saturday, the cake was like one I had never seen, it tasted like...., My sister invented a new food, it was green and hard and shine, it tasted like....
