Learning the Sense of Smell

 

Objective:

·The students will listen to The Honeybee and the Robber.

·Students will use their sense of smell to identify 10 different items and draw a picture of what they think it is.

·Students will be able to state the body part used for smell.

Materials:

v Story: The Honey Bee and the Robber by: Eric Carle

v10 film canisters

v10 food items - such as cinnamon, lemon, peanut butter, toothpaste etc..

v construction paper divide into 10 squares for each child

v An excellent source of background information is Sense of Smell. 

Activities:

1.Read story: The Honey Bee and the Robber and discuss

2.Explain to the children how a" bee" uses only its sense of smell.

3.Introduce the sense of smell and give background information on the nose.

4.Place blindfold on students and have them guess what smell they are smelling, like a "smelling-bee".

5.Pass around canisters containing various items.

6.Have students guess what is in each of them and draw a picture of what they think it is. Students can use draw and paint applications of software or use KidPix stamps.

7.After everyone has smelled each canister, tell what was in each and see which students are your true "smelling bees".

8.Give out scratch and sniff stickers as a treat.

Evaluation:

ü Have students state one way they use their sense of smell everyday.

ü   Have students give examples of good smells and bad smells.

ü   Have students name the body part used for smelling and have students write one sentence on the computer on how they use their sense of smell each day.


Extension:

    Have students make a model of a nose, they can use clay, pencil and paper or the paint/draw application of their computer software. They must include the nostril, cartilage and septum. Have students visit this site to learn more about the sense of smell: Kids Health.
