Title: Why Are The Everglades So Special?

The student will recognize and identify one valuable aspect of the Everglades National Park's environment and draw conclusions as to why they value it.

Students evaluate each other's presentations about Everglades plants, animals or activities for accuracy and clarity using a Student Evaluation Checklist.

Have students look at various newspapers and newsletters to see what the components are

Brainstorm student jobs: reporters, editors, graphics, research, layout design, proofreaders, publishers. Assign jobs.
Discuss the parts of the newsletter: masthead (name and design of name for newsletter), headline (short catchy news of the day), articles (text) and photos (photos, clip art, digital photos)
Have students begin to collect data for articles: environmental news, endangered animals, articles on specific animals and plants, habitats, jokes, riddles, field trip reports...
Use a two or three column format for newsletter
Have students begin to type articles
Copy and paste photos, graphics and clip art to disks
Layout design and graphics students can insert photos, graphics and clip art
Have proofreader proofread
Spell check
Publish
Send home copies to parents
Homework:
Read a local newspaper or online newspaper and bring in an article about an animal habitat, the environment, environmental protection, or the Everglades. Share the who, what, why, where and when of article.
