LESSON 5:   Shock Waves

                                                         Electrical Safety

OBJECTIVE
The student recognizes the ways energy and matter interact and how electricity can be dangerous.

TIME
2 class periods

MATERIALS
Computer with Internet access

VOCABULARY
Danger, electrical shock, high voltage -Use Glossary at: The Learning Center  

PROCEDURE
1.  Have students visit .USA Department of Agriculture- Safety Tips.

2.  Discuss the information with the class.

3.  Discuss other situations in which electrical energy may be dangerous.

4.  Students will research further on electrical safety logging into:
The Learning Center 
Smarty Electric Coloring Book 
Frankenstein Lightning Laboratory

5. The student will create a do's and don't book on electrical safety. They will copy the pictures from the websites to create their book.

6. The student will write an expository paragraph to explain how electricity can harm and how to stay safe.

7. At this site, Just For Kids Education and Safety have students click on Just for Kids and on Electric Safety to gather more information on electricity and safety.

ONGOING ACTIVITIES
    a.  Scavenger Hunt (finding answers to questions and copying and pasting pictures to create the collage).
    b.  Writing responses in Science Journals to experiment observations and other information researched that day.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY
Invite a guest speaker from your local power company to talk to the class about safety.
 

HOME LEARNING
The student will search their home under the supervision of their parents or guardian for electrical hazards.  The student will make a list of what they found and add to their safety book.
