LESSON 4:   SIZZLING MOVES

Sources of Heat

OBJECTIVE
The student understands that heat can be produced in many ways. The student will identify and materials that conduct heat and learn to use a thermometer to measure heat.

TIME
2-3  class periods

MATERIALS
Hot and Cold by Allan Fowler  (Children's press)
Hot or Not? by Nicola Baxter (Children's Press)
Styrofoam cups, plastic cups, empty metal cans
aluminum pan
water
thermometers

VOCABULARY
heat, conductor, insulator, thermometer -use glossary at The Learning Center

PROCEDURE

1.  Students will brainstorm a list of places where they have felt heat.

2.  Read Hot or Not by Nicola Baxter (Children's Press)

3.  Discuss What are some sources of heat and how heat moves from one place to another.  Why is it Important to know? (for safety of burns)

4.  Discuss Conductors and Insulators.

5.  Students will see movie on heat at Brain Pop .

6.  Students will work in groups to research the web to find out what objects transfer heat faster than others.  Which ones are conductors and insulators. Go to The Miami Museum of Science, click on past exhibits. The ATOMS Family to research

(Note: This site is also available in CD Rom).

5.  Student will experiment with different containers to investigate which container will
warm up fastest.
      a. Put the same amount of water in a foam cup,  a metal cup and a plastic cup.
      b. Place a thermometer in each container.
      c.  Record the temperatures shown in each.
      d. Set the containers in a pan of warm water.

(Note: students may need the teacher to warm up water for them)

      e. Students will write prediction on which container will warm up fastest.
      f.  Wait 5 minutes. Observe and record each temperature. Compare your results
          with your prediction.

6. Students will use their data to create a graph using the spreadsheet program in ClarisWorks  to show their findings.

ONGOING ACTIVITIES
    a.  Scavenger Hunt (finding answers to questions and copying and pasting pictures to create the collage).
    b.  Writing responses in Science Journals to experiment observations and other information researched that day.

HOME LEARNING
Write a paragraph to tell why it is so important to know which objects are conductors and which are insulators.
