MATERIALS
Flash, Crash, Rumble and Roll!  by Franklin M. Branley
flashlights
several objects:  mirrors, see through glass or plastics, dark solids, metallic
Scavenger Hunt Handout

VOCABULARY

PROCEDURE
1.  The students will brainstorm what objects are sources of light,

2.  Read the story Flash, Crash, Rumble and Roll by Franklin M. Branley.

3.  Discuss how light travels and what happens when it strikes different objects - light will go through objects, bend, reflect off objects or be absorbed)

4.  Students will view a movie on light at Brain Pop

5.  Students will experiment with different objects using flashlights and record what happens to the light as it strikes each object.  Record findings.

6.  Students will work in groups to create a web using CD Inspiration 6, a software on graphic organizers or they can also use the drawing program in ClarisWorks.  This web will show their findings of their experiment.  They will show what objects reflected, absorbed, bent or let light through. (see Rubrics & Samples)

ONGOING ACTIVITIES
    a.  Scavenger Hunt (finding answers to questions and copying and pasting pictures to create the collage).
    b.  Writing responses in Science Journals to experiment observations and other information researched that day.

HOME LEARNING
Do further investigation at home with different objects and light.  Draw illustrations of each object tested and label what happened to the light.
