WATTS UP?
A hands-on Investigation of energy sources and the conservation of energy.

How It Works:
Energy sources are running out. In the future many things will be different and we must search for alternatives for our future sources of energy. Through this project, students will learn to classify different forms of energy, how to keep safe from dangerous electrical energy, and  how to conserve energy. Activities will include using the sun to make an electrifying dessert; an electronic scavenger hunt which will improve the students research techniques on the web; games; puzzles; viewing movies and working online. Students print and copy from websites to create a collage on energy and maintain a notebook about energy which they will hand in at the end of the unit.

Standards:

  • The student recognizes that energy may be changed in form with varying efficiency.
  • The student understand the interaction of matter and energy.
  • The students understands the consequences of using limited natural resources.
  • The student uses the scientific process.
  • The student uses and describes basic measurement for temperature.
  • The student understands significant aspects and accomplishments of men and women in historical periods.
  • The student uses technology tools to collect and organize data
  • The student uses technology to enhance learning, increase productivity and promote creativity

Estimated Class Periods To Complete:
10 or more

Software Materials Used:
Students will need access to the Internet, which will be their main source for research and a printer to print selected worksheets. ClarisWorks is used to write about the project, create a collage and make graphs that reflect their observations done. A digital camera is needed to take pictures of their projects and a scanner to scan pictures into ClarisWorks as part of a collage.

Keywords:
Energy, Light, Heat, Electricity, Energy Efficiency, Fossil Fuels, Solar Energy, Wind, Nuclear, Conservation

Students:
This unit was developed for a 2nd grade level. If can be adapted for all elementary levels to participate but mostly for primary grades. The students must know how to use the Internet, have a basic knowledge of computers and how to use the designated software. Students will work in groups and partners to help each other in the acquisition of knowledge through the web and other software.

Overall Value:
Energy is motion. What better way to teach energy than through technology in where kids can see energy at work? The final product of the energy collage and the written project will give the students pride in their originality and give them appropriation in conserving energy.

Tips:
You will need to prepare a center with books, magazines, and other resources where students can go to research. Bookmark all URL's that you want the kids to go into to save time. At Brain Pop.com  you are only allowed to view five movies a day. There is a special program for schools in which you can subscribe for one month and have unlimited use for free. You must subscribe ahead of time.
