How It Works:
This project actively engages students in learning about insects. Hands-on
activities include collecting specimens, making a butterfly balance, and
learning about how insects use camouflage to hide from their enemies.
Technology is infused into the curriculum through the use of the Internet to
gather information about insects, to "Ask an Expert" science related
questions, and by publishing poems, stories, and a newsletter.
Standards:
The student uses scientific process skills.
The student uses the Internet as a tool.
The student writes to communicate ideas and information effectively.
The student used basic word processing skills.
The student identifies insects and their characteristics.
The student use technology tools to process data and report results
Students use telecommunications to publish and interact with peers, audiences
and expert's
Estimated Class Periods To Complete:
10 or more
Software Materials Used:
Word processing and desktop publishing can be completed using The
Student Writing Center, ClarisWorks/AppleWorks or any other writing software.
Students should have access to the Internet for research, on-line inquiry and
communication.
Keywords:
Insects, butterflies, life cycle, moths
, metamorphosis, cocoon, chrysalis
.
Students:
This project was completed by first grade students and would be
suitable for grades K-3 of various abilities. Students need to have basic
reading, writing, and computer mouse skills.
Overall:
The project improves reading, writing and science skills as well as word
processing and research abilities. Infusing technology into hands-on science
and language arts increases motivation and positive attitude toward learning.
Tips:
Teachers can transform their classrooms into a wilderness, rainforest, or
desert before beginning this project. Decorate bulletin boards, set aside an
insect library, hang insect artifacts around the room and from the ceiling,
create center activities related to insects or their habitats, and Bookmark
Internet sites for easier student access.
