Pre-Internet Activity
For the introduction of the unit, as a whole group activity,
use the United States map to show where the following states are located:
South Dakota, Arizona, Florida and New York.
Explain that Native
American nations are scattered all over the United States, and how they
will be researching on four nations that live in these four states.
Divide the students into four groups, assigning one state to each.
Have them research in the encyclopedia, books, or the internet common crops
and climates of these four states to report to the whole class.
Have
them focus on how they think Native Americans tribes in these states might
have differed or been the same based on the facts they found.
After
they give their oral report, assign the center where each state will begin
their Native American journey.
