I even interviewed one of my closest relatives for the information I needed. Here is the interview!!
For my assignment, I interviewed my grandmother,
Florance Kor-Cincota.
She is 83 and was born on May 8, 1919. One of her sons is my father.
Her father was the first of my family to come over to
America. His name was Stephan Kor and
he came over to New York from Austria-Hungary.
In Austria-Hungary, he had graduated from
an university and then fled to America
hoping to escape the war drafting. My
great-grandmother also came over from Austria-Hungary
but later and also by herself.
Stephan came here during the depression
and worked as a waiter. He later met
Margit, my great-grandmother and they got
married soon after that. They had 4
children; the second, Florance is my grandmother.
They moved to the Bronx and raised
a family there because it was convenient
and there were other Hungarian immigrants
in the that their family had known or
they later met.
Margit may seem like
an unusual name but it happens to
be a Norwegian name that has roots
in the culture that goes back very
far. Some Norwegian customs were in Austria-Hungary
because Norwegians migrated years ago across
Europe. So you could say I'm also
part Norwegian, but it's a very small
part. I have some gypsy blood also.
Right now I live in Brooklyn, New
York and I'm going to be living here
for a while. I love New York, I
think it's the best place for me to
live.
