Copy-that : Pitfalls of Plagiarism

Instructional Objectives: 1) Students will understand the concepts of "plagiarism" in both a journalistic and academic setting; 2) Students will understand the dangers and ethics related to plagiarism

Time Required: one 45-minute class period

Vocabulary, concepts, focus questions, key points: plagiarism, journalistic ethics

 

Procedures:

1) Discuss the danger of plagiarism. Direct the students to the plagiarism activities site (http://teachersnetwork.org/teachnet-lab/mbhs/scragg/plagiarism.html)

2) Let the students know about the ethics surrounding copying from others' work.

3) Have them read the story of Janet Cooke to understand what consequences breaking journalistic ethics can have.

4) Make sure students understand how to cite an internet source as directed through the links on the activities page.
