The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Gauguin in New York Collections: The Lure of the Exotic

Students may visit this major exhibition in NYC on Fifth Avenue and 82nd St. that is on display from June 18-2002 through October 20, 2002.  This marks the first occasion in more than 40 years that Paul Gauguin has been a major subject shown at the Met in NYC. Approximately 120 works drawn from public and private collections will be on view, comprising paintings, sculptures drawings, and prints. Featured will be important works from stages in the artist’s career from Brittany, Provence, Martinique, Tahiti, and the Marquesas Islands. The exhibition will provide a telling account of the reception of his works on this side of the Atlantic.

Book: The Lure of the Exotic: Gauguin in New York Collections – by Colta Ives and Susan Alyson Stein, with Charlotte Hale and Marjorie Shelley, 2002. This has been published in conjunction with the Gauguin exhibit at the Met.  This book explores the development of Gauguin’s art in the context of his travels, discusses the history of collecting and exhibiting the artist’s work in New York, and technical examination of his materials and techniques.  In addition, there are many revealing excerpts from Gauguin’s letters and other writings.
