Learning With Ladybugs

Project URL:
http://teachersnetwork.org/teachnet-lab/ps101/mrspeluso/Ladybugs/introduction.htm

How it works:
This interdisciplinary resource gives students the opportunity to learn about their favorite insect through a variety of activities and worksheets. Students are first sent on a cyber hunt to locate the answers to factual questions about the ladybug. They are then able to print out and complete educational and fun worksheets in the areas of science, language arts, visual arts, and mathematics.  A teacher resource section provides information on keeping ladybugs in the classroom for scientific observation; ladybug poetry and lore; and additional resources to enhance and expand this popular topic.

Standards addressed:
Students learn and describe how organisms change as they grow and mature; construct meaning from a wide range of texts; and understand the different ways numbers are represented and used in the real world.

Materials used:
Most of the activities only require a computer with Internet connection and a printer, along with pencils and/or pens. You will also want to either purchase or borrow from the library copies of the recommended nonfiction and fiction books for your classroom.  Arts and crafts supplies will vary depending on which activities you select.

The students:
Students in grades K through three will benefit from this learning tool. This is a great way to reach visual learners and those who are at risk. Students are given exposure to different learning styles, and many of the interactive web sites allow for self-paced learning.

Overall value:
Unlike many other units on the same topic, Learning With Ladybugs offers a visual and easy-to-use format that appeals to different types of learners. In addition to resources found at educational sites such as www.enchantedlearning.com , there are many original worksheets available. For teachers, links to projects from other schools can provide inspiration.

Tips:
For additional ideas, consult two books: Ladybugs--a thematic unit by Dona Herweck Rice, published by Teacher Created Materials, and Ladybugs by GEMS (Great Explorations in Math and Science) from The Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley.  If you have your own ladybug curricular materials to share, please e-mail Marion and they will be added to the project.
