It's time to sell yourself at your interview.
Preparation:
- Before your interview, you need some preparation. Use the Web to find out as much
as you can about the company and position you are interviewing for. Know
the company's mission and goals. Be prepared to highlight examples of
how you possess the skills, talents, and/or experience required for the position.
Tips:
- Be punctual. Arrive about 15 minutes before the scheduled interview
time.
- Include these
self-descriptive words.
- Maintain eye contact with the interviewer.
- Demonstrate confidence and positive body language by sitting up straight,
smiling, and facing
the interviewer. Try not to fidget.
- Dress for success. (male
female)
- Research the company.
- Give insight into past positions and accomplishments and how they
were important to the
company.
- Be prepared to explain what you expect from the job and what you can
offer the company.
- Rehearse in front of a mirror or videotape your rehearsal. Then critique
your appearance, body language, and speech.
- Leave on a positive note. Reinforce the fact that you are very
interested in working for this company and thank the interviewer for his
or her
time.
- Ask for a business card so that you can send out a thank you letter.
Take a mock interview:
- Work with a partner in your class. Take turns being the interviewer
and the job applicant. Use the following questions to role play an
interview situation.
- Why are you interested in this position?
- What do you know about our company?
- What related experience and skills do you have?
- How has your previous experience and education prepared you for this
position?
- What will you offer our company?
- What are your interests and goals?
- How do you work under pressure?
- What do you hope to achieve with our company?
- Why should we hire you?
- Where do you see yourself in two years?
- What questions do you have for me about the position and/or company?
