THE GEOGRAPHY OF INDONESIA

 

Indonesia is divided into three groups of Islands.

 

1.                 The Greater Sunda Islands include Borneo, Java, Sulawesi, and Sumatra. Most economic activity can be found in the Greater Sunda Islands. Java has the highest population of all the islands. Borneo is the third largest island in the world.

2.                 The Lesser Sunda IslandsÐ Two famous islands in this group are Bali and Timor. East Timor is a separate country.

3.                 The Molucca Islands Ðused to be known as ÒThe Spice IslandsÓ because of the spices such as cloves, nutmeg and mace that were grown there. Located in Northeastern Indonesia, Halmahera is the largest island in the group.
