Symbolism in The Scarlet Letter

Symbolism in The Scarlet Letter is a unit designed to help students understand specific clues in the novel. Students will understand that Nathaniel Hawthorne had a specific goal in mind when writing this novel and each character is meant to represent his feelings about Puritan society. By using symbolism, he reveals these feelings to the reader. The teacher should understand that these lessons should be used in conjunction with other lessons pertaining to the novel. They may be used after the entire novel is read, or while it is being read. Good Luck!!!
