UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS OF POETRY

 

Free Verse
Free Verse is a fun way to end the unit because there are so many possibilities. This particular poem can be understood by using students' understanding of previous forms studies in class.

 

 

Aim: Introduction to Free Verse

Objective: Students will be exposed to a poem written n the Free Verse form.

Procedure:

  1. Refresh students memory of the Free Verse form.
  2. Hand out Free Verse worksheet.
  3. Hand out 13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird, by Wallace Stevens.
  4. Separate students into 13 groups and have them interpret the stanzas.
  5. Students should share findings.
  6. Note to Teacher: There are many interpretations and you may want to search the web for some possibilities.
