Teachers Network

FrontPage 2000 Advanced Basics - Creating a BBS

1. Open your FP web by going File, Open Web and entering: http://teachersnetwork.org/teachnet-lab/yourschool

2. Once your web is open, select File, New Web.

3. Select the web discussion wizard.

4. Check the box that says "Add to current web."
5. Follow the steps in the Discussion Web Wizard.

Keep in mind the following:

a. "Anyone can post articles" means just that and you will need to monitor the BBS regularly.

b. If you choose "Only registered users" you will have to enter a username and password for all of your students (only do this is you have your own domain, not on teachersnetwork.org/teachnet-lab/).  Or, you can create a self-registration page.  But, be aware that students often forget their passwords.

6. Be sure and select NO, otherwise it will over right your current index file!
7. Once you have created your discussion web you will want to edit postings.  To do this you will need to access these files (each posting is an html file).  Do this by clicking on Tools, Web Settings, Advanced and checking the Show documents in hidden directories box.

Follow the prompts to complete this process.

8. To view edit posts find the file that contains the posting (html files) on the left-hand file view pane.  The folder begins with an underscore.  The posts are numbered.

Double click on a numbered file to view it in the page pane on the right.  Edit as you would any other web page.

Don't delete the entire file.  Instead modify or delete the contents of the file.  This preserves the continuity of the postings so that users can browse with the "next" and "back" buttons.

You are now ready to begin your discussions.

A few more tips:

a. Establish a protocol that requires students to use their first and last names when identifying themselves in a post.  Don't allow tags or other nicknames.

b. Be sure to establish up front a general code of conduct on the bbs that's consistent with the norms of the class (respect for all, etc.).

c. Demonstrate when students are to use the Reply function as opposed to using the Post function.  It will help keep the BBS threads orderly.

d. Use the accessibility of the BBS to invite those outside of your classroom that could contribute to the conversations.  Some examples would include: an expert on the topic, another teacher, parents, another class.
