Changing the Past

by Micky

Today is April 3, 2001 and it’s a typical day for Kim and Robby. Kim a tall, brown hair, brown eyes, black woman is getting up from her bed. She is met by her husband, Robby, a tall, white man, blond hair and hazel eyes. She looks out the window straight at the ocean. She always smiles because she always knows that she couldn’t have a better life than she already has. She talks with her husband about how it’s great living in Miami, Florida and by an ocean. On this early morning Robby goes off to work . Today Kim looks through the pictures of everyone in her family in her house. She loves her family and friends a lot. She knows all her ancestors and all the great stories going back to her great, great, great–grandmother.  Kim loved her a lot and knew everything about her. She knew that she lived during the age of slavery and all the brutal things she went through. She keeps a picture of her great, great, great–grandmother in her living room, which she looks at everyday.

One day she stood in front of the picture and thought how it would be to live a life in slavery. All of a sudden she gets dizzy and falls to the ground.

About an hour passes by when Kim finally wakes up. She looks around stunned because she doesn’t know where she is. All she can see are big trees and leaves all over. She realizes she is somewhere in a forest. She never saw this place before. She decides to walk a little to see if she can find a sign indicating where she is. After walking a little she comes upon a sign, which says, “Welcome to Georgia”. This is when she finally knew she was in Georgia, but to her it didn’t look like modern Georgia. To her it seemed as if it was around the year 1830 or 1840. She made this guess because she had read about how the country changed through time. She decided to keep walking on.

In just a little while she came upon a big house. All of a sudden she heard a noise coming from the bushes. Her husband Robby pops up out of the bushes. Kim was surprised to see him. The both couldn’t understand or see where they were. They both decided to keep walking. While walking they talked about how they got to this place. Kim described exactly how she fainted while looking at her great, great, great grandmother’s picture. Robby also explained how he saw Kim on the floor when he came into the room.

He put his hands on Kim to see what happened and then he ended up here with Kim. This is basically how Robby got into the picture. While talking they came upon a house. All of a sudden they heard a scream. It was coming from a woman. They started to run toward the sound. There they saw a black woman getting beaten by five white men. They both looked with horror when they saw the white men beating and whipping the woman. Kim right away knew that she was in a years of slavery. The five white men basically tortured the women for five minutes. After that they left laughing as if something was funny. Kim and Robby both hurried to the crying women. They quickly offered help.

Looking at the women, she was very lean and short, brown hair and black eyes. After a while the women stopped crying. She looked up at both of them. The women started to flinch when she looked at Robby. Kim told her to calm down. She thought Robby would hurt her because he was a white man. The woman sat up. Kim asked her what was her name. She replied back that her name was Martha. Kim then proceeded to ask what was the year. Martha answered that the year was 1840. Now Kim knew everything. She was in the year 1840, in the state of Georgia and in the Antibellum South, where slavery is occurring. Then a white man came out of the house calling Martha. The house was located near a lake and surrounded by trees and bushes.

The man that came out moved quickly towards them. He pulled Martha in a brutal way, away from Kim and Robby. He quickly asked who they were and where they come from. They made up a story that they were from NY and Robby had to say he was Kim’s master. They also said that they don’t have any place to stay. The man rudely said that they couldn’t stay here. Martha tried to convince the man by telling him that Kim and Robby were good people and that he wouldn’t want both of them in the forest where it’s cold and damp. The man agreed to let them stay.

He told Robby to stay in the house with him and Kim to go sleep with Martha in the shack in the backyard. After he said this, the man pulled Martha towards and into the house. Robby turned to Kim and they started to talk. “How are we going to get out this place?” he said.

“I guess we have to find out a way” she replied. They proceeded to walk into the house. Inside the house was really big. If you could describe the inside of the house with one word it could be fancy.

Everything was mostly clean. As Kim looked out the window she sees it was getting dark. Right then and there Martha walks in to cleang the house. It wasn’t weird to see her cleaning and be treated how she’s treated because she is a slave. Afterwards Martha, of course, cooked the meal. Slaves don’t get to eat the same things as the white people. She made some rice and chicken and a little of vegetables for Robby and the man. After being ready she served it and she left. Martha always took the leftovers, which were usually mashed up corn and scraps of rice and chicken. She really didn’t have anything to eat. Kim she had no chance ediether.

They both picked up the scraps and went out back to the shack to eat. The shack was pretty big but there was hardly anything in it: wo beds, separate from each other, a small stove and a bathroom that looked really vile.

“I think we never properly introduced ourselves” said Kim. “My name is Kim Walters, what’s yours?”

“My name is Martha Brooks and I am 27 years old.”

“Oh, your name is Martha Brooks!?”

“Yes, why?”

“Oh nothing.” Kim changes the conversation “ How does the master treat you?” “Master Eddy treats me very bad; he screams and yells and also makes fun of me being black.”

“Eddy also tried to rape me once.

“Did he succeed in doing the act?” Kim said.

“Yes,” Marther replied “ I got pregnant with his baby.Well, after I had it, he took it and sold it.

“Do you know to where he sold it off?”

"No," Martha replied," but I know he sent to a far away place so I wouldn’t get in touch with her.”

“It was a boy?”

“No, it was a girl.”

“Did you get to name her Megan?” asked Kim.

“Actually yes, I named her Megan.”

“Did you say Megan?” said Kim.

“Yes," said Martha. "Why?”

“Oh nothing, let’s go to sleep for now.” They pulled the covers and turned off the light. Finally Kim knows that Martha is her great, great, great grandmother. She knew because she read about it and someone from her family told her that her g,g,g, grandmother's named was Martha Brooks. She also knew because she was told about the daughter, the only daughter that Martha had who was named Megan. Now she knows she must help Martha out. Finally Kim fell asleep.

The next morning, Kim woke up and saw Martha run out the shack. “Why are you in such hurry?.

“I’ve got to make Master Eddy's breakfast.” She left.

Kim got up with her sweet time and fixed herself up. All of a sudden Robby comes in the shack.“Good Morning honey”.

“Good Morning Robby. How was your sleep?”

Robby replied, “it felt good sleeping in a king sized bed for once.”

"Shut u,p Robby, before you sleep by yourself for this whole week.”

"Sorry, Sorry.” Kim then started to talk about what she discovered. She told Robby that Martha was her g,g,g, grandmother. She told how she knew.. Robby was astonished; he could believe it. “So she’s the women in the living room at our house in that picture.”.

She told how Eddy was treating Martha and all about the rape and baby. "Robby< all of it was awful." All of a sudden a scream come from the house. “It’s Martha ,let’s go.”

They both raced to the house where they saw Eddy beating up Martha violently. “You forgot to clean the dishes yesterday and you went straight to sleep.” Bitch you not supposed to do that”. He kept beating on her violently. Martha started to bleed.

“Stop!” she cried. But he wouldn’t stop. He had the look in his eyes like he was going to kill her.

“Do something Robby”Eddy stop.” Robby reached out and grabbed his arm so he could make him stop, but Eddy just kicked him. Robby fell and hit his head on the floor hard, He was hurt. Eddy kept beating Martha, Kim standing there couldn’t believe it. Martha is half dead. She knew she had to act. She took a pan and whacked Eddy over the head repeatedly. She kept banging the pan across his head. Martha screamed out “Stop”, but Kim couldn’t. All you can see is fire in Kim’s  eyes. “Kim, Stop!” Martha yelled. Kim finally stopped. Martha bent down and looked at Eddy. With all the blood trickeling from her face on to his battered head. She started to cry. “He’s dead?!” she said. “ You killed him”. Kim couldn’t believe it, she just killed a white man. If someone knew about this she would be in trouble.

"We’ve got to do something with him," Robby said getting up with dizziness, his head still hurting from the fall. “You killed him. We’ve got to do something with him quick. There is only one thing we can do, burn the house. We can’t leave evidence,” Robby said. “Yeah let’s do that; maybe nobody will notice.” All of them proceeded to walk outside. Robby got a bunch of cans of gun powder and spread it though the house leading outside. Without a word he lit a match and threw it. The house blew up in flames. Martha couldn’t take seeing this so she ran away, straight into the forest.

“Wait Martha!!” Kim took one step and tried to run after her but all of a sudden she fainted. She fell on Robby. It all happened with a blurr.

The very next day Kim wakes up and she finds herself in her house again. She gets up from the living room floor and right there Robby walks in from the bedroom. “We're back”.

“Yes” said Kim, “were back.” She looks at the picture of her g,g,g grandmother. “There’s something different. She’s” smiling; she’s not serious anymore.” Right next to the picture is her chain that Martha wore. “ It wasn’t a dream. I helped me g,g,g grandmother.
