My Civil War Period Slavery Study

This study of slavery was done using three sources of information.
Primary: My primary source was slave interviews.
Secondary: My secondary source was passages from the book Fields of Fury.
This project was difficult because of cutting and pasting and getting the information on the slaves. Also it was hard to read the writing because the slave was talking and the writing was exactly what they said. Slaves weren't very educated so they would use words that were words that we don't hear very often. Even though the writing was difficult I liked it because it showed how people who used to be slaves would talk.I thought this project was very interesting because I got to learn how slaves felt about slavery and their stories.

"From 1936 to 1938, over 2,300 former slaves from across the American South were interviewed by writers and journalists under the aegis of the Works Progress Administration. These former slaves, most born in the last years of the slave regime or during the Civil War, provided first-hand accounts of their experiences on plantations, in cities, and on small farms."
The Interviews

These interviews are in the collection of the Library of Congress.

I read the transcribed interview with a former slave named Emma Crockett.
