Teachers Network

OVERVIEW

To the Teacher:

The narrative writing project is a two-week project created for the seventh grade.  Students will write a narrative account in a diary or journal-based format, based on the life and conflicts of a character that they create.  They will then design a Microsoft Publisher Web page that will contain those journal entries.  Students of all ability levels have successfully finished this project.  The major goals of the project include drafting, editing, and finalizing a narrative account and creating a professional-looking Web page, complete with graphics and reflection, using Microsoft Publisher and the Internet.

The standards addressed include producing a fictional narrative account based on a character that they have brainstormed, fully demonstrating an understanding of the rules of grammar and spelling, as well analyzing and revising work through the writing process, using the Internet to search for information, and becoming proficient in Microsoft Publisher.  The first week of the project will be dedicated to outlining, brainstorming, and drafting, while the second week will have students inputting their information into Publisher, searching for pictures on the Web, and completing their Web page.

To the Students:

NARRATIVE WRITING ASSIGNMENT

We will be working on our narrative assignment over the course of the next few weeks.  You will be writing a fictional narrative account and creating a Microsoft Publisher Webpage related to that account.  Your assignment is as follows:

  1. You will be writing an ongoing journal/diary from SOMEONE else’s point of view. You can choose any type of character you would like, from any time period.
  1. Your narrative account will consist of FIVE journal entries that will be two to three paragraphs each.  You will be writing these during class and for homework.
  2. You will be writing about the ups and downs of that character’s life—his or her struggles, insecurities, successes and failures.  It can mirror some of the troubles and times of your own life, or you can create a whole new set of problems for your character.
  3. Your Microsoft Publisher Webpage will have at least FOUR pages:  a home page, a page (or more) containing your journal entries, a page where you will reflect on the writing process, and a comments page where others can make comments about your work.
  4. You will be graded on content as well as grammar, spelling, and presentation.  We will be peer-editing in class and I will be helping you whenever you need more help.
