LESSON SIX and SEVEN

Aim: How can we create a layout for our newspaper?

Instructional Objectives: Students will be able to work together to create a newspaper layout.

Materials:

 

Motivation:   Have students take out school newspaper distributed earlier in the week.  Ask students if pages are similar or different.  Ask students who they think laid out the newspaper and why each page was laid out the way it was.

Instructional Activities:

1. Ask students to take out picture(s) from last night's homework.

2. Using a laptop and projector, students will view different newspapers on the website http://onlinenewspapers.com/index.htm.  Students will discuss how the newspapers are similar and different.

3. In groups, students will brainstorm ideas for the layout of their newspaper's section.

4. Teacher will distribute large poster board to each group. The poster board will represent one page in their newspaper. Students will use oaktag to layout their news articles.

5. Teacher will hand back students' articles.

6. Students will write their final draft according to their newspaper layout.

7. Students will layout their newspaper section using their articles, photos, etc.

8. Students will do a gallery walk of each section of the newspaper.

9. Each group will do a short presentation of his/her section, discussing the topics they chose to write about and giving a brief summary of each article.

 

Homework: Students will complete "Learning Log Worksheet".
