Out Loud: Preparing for a Poetry Read-Aloud
Developed by Sandy Scragg, New York City 2002
lessons | video | poems | resources
This rubric was prepared by the class after the first poetry reading done in class. Students chose a partner, and then evaluated them based on their in-class performance. Students did not "rate" their classmates on a numerical basis, but instead, chose the best category for each topic and then wrote an explanation in the boxes below. Students reviewed these comments before reading publicly, outside the classroom.
Question | Yes, definitely | Not consistent, needs some improvement | No, needs to be worked on before a public performance |
Have I chosen a poem that appeals to me and will also appeal to my audience?
Am I reading clearly, with proper annunciation?
Am I reading loudly enough to be heard?
Am I reading at a proper pace to be understood?
Am I expressing the emotion of the poem through my voice and expression?
