Days Five and Six

Instructional Objectives:  Students (in cooperative groups) will use research to construct an "L" chart (what they learned).  Students (in cooperative groups) will present what they have learned to their classmates.  Students will review and critique other students research and presentations.  Students will test each others group knowledge during group presentations.

Vocabulary, Concepts and Terms

jeopardy  evaluation  rating sheets  critique  present  body language  presentation techniques  audience behavior

Time Required: Approximately 90 minutes

Advance Preparation: Previous day’s ‘W’ charts prepared by students should be hung around the classroom.

Materials Required: Chalk and chalkboard, chart paper for K-W-L chart and markers. Any previous K-W-L work., Elvis Jeopardy Game for wrap-up activity.

Instructions to teacher: Have students immediately break up into their K-W-L groups. Have each group take out its handwritten loose leaf copy of its ‘W" chart. Check to make sure that each group has done previous day’s assignment, that is, that someone in the group has printed out information about Elvis from the internet. (Believe it or not, each group in my class was prepared with their information.) If you should have one group without information, please provide printed materials on Elvis that you have downloaded. I rewarded each member of the group that had actually done the research with a Extra Credit pass worth 10 points toward his/her next test/project.

Aim:  What did we LEARN about Elvis?

Activity:

Say: "You now have information in front of you about Elvis, thanks to a responsible member or two of your group. Now you must do the following:

Note to teacher: Groups may be unable to answer all of their questions about Elvis using their own team’s research. After each group has exhausted its own research documents, have the groups rotate/swap research materials (internet research). Groups may be able to find answers to their own research on another groups research.

Say:    Each group must make a five minute presentation of your findings (answers to questions).  You must select one or 2 people from your group to represent your group.  You may use your notes, charts, research paperwork, etc. during your presentation.  Your classmates may ask you to explain your answer(s) further - so be prepared.  I may also ask questions.  Your group will be graded as a whole.  Your grade will depend on whether or not WE (the rest of the class and I) feel you have done your work thoroughly.  You will be graded as follows:

A - You did a great job!  Your team was able to answer questions and knew its information
B - You did a good job, but missed a couple of facts.  Some of your teammates contradicted each other.

C - You needed to work harder as a team.  Perhaps you needed better research information. Your team didn't seem to have all of its information.

D - We are not convinced that you conducted your research properly, reviewed your material properly, or worked well as a team.

Instructions to Teacher:

Prior to the students' presentations, explain that following the presentations, they will be playing an  Elvis Jeopardy Game prepared by you (teacher) using any information discussed during the presentations.  This wrap-up activity will keep them alert and involved during the discussions.
