| I have taught bilingual third and fifth grade classes in
low socio-economic areas with an average of 75% of students
on free and reduced lunch. My approach to teaching my predominantly
Spanish speaking population of students is to use ESL strategies
to introduce vocabulary and new concepts in English. When appropriate,
I use Spanish as a bridge to English.
Students in my class are exposed to a print-rich environment
with many opportunities to acquire English. I will often match
pictures to English vocabulary. My experience in the classroom
has been focused around how to assist English Language Learners
in their transition from Spanish to English.
