Cockroaches, tarantulas, millipedes

Subject: About M. hissing cockroaches
From: Christina

Do the cockroaches reproduce easily? I would really like to know because I own three cockroaches.

Thank you,

Dear Christina,

My Madagascan Hissing Cockroaches reproduced a year ago very easily. We have many cockroaches and I have passed them around to other teachers. I think that the big issue is whether you have all females or all males. Read the Critter Corner entry again where I describe the male-female differences. Good luck; I hope that you have baby roaches - and there are not many people I could say that to!

Subject: African Giant Millipedes
From: Shawna

Hi! recently I've become interested in insects as pets, and have at the moment two african giant millipedes. I am interested in aquiring a few hissing cockroaches, but don't know where to look for them, since the pet shops around here don't have them. Any suggestions? If so, please write back with any information.

Thank you,

Dear Shawna,

Wow! I would love to know more about your African Giant Millipedes. They sound terrific. Where did you get them? The Madagascan Hissing Cockroaches can be ordered from Carolina Biological Supply Company, 2700 York Road, Burlington, NC. 27215-3398 Their phone number is 1-800-334-5551. Good luck. I hope you get them soon. And please tell me more about your great millipedes!

Subject: Rosy the Tarantula

From: GrrrrlsRLE@...

Do you feed her mealworms. How old is she?

Dear Grrrrls,
I feed my tarantula crickets although it is possible that they might eat mealworms sometimes. I do think that it would be a good idea to feed it crickets some of the time however.

Good luck.

Subject: Re: millipedes and cockroaches

From: Shawna

Hi Judy!

Well, I got my milli's from the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa, CA, for various prices. The medium giant africans were $14.00, the large ones were $18.00, and the smaller "pumpkin" ones were $8.00. I picked up two of the medium ones, and presently they are in a 20 gallon show terrarium complete with a blend of potting soils and reptile turf, two live potted plants which they leave alone, a food dish, and a large piece of driftwood they can crawl over. So far, it appears I might be expecting more, since the two I have have been courting! Twice or three times a day I need to mist the whole tank, and I have a reptile heat rock underground for them to choose what place they like the best.

Thank you so much for the information on the cockroaches, I plan on calling them soon! If you need any more info, write back.

Dear Shawna, I am a bit far from Costa Mesa, CA--although I was born in California and lived in Southern California for 15 years. But I am definitely on the lookout for giant millipedes. You have tweaked my interest. I will let you know if I am successful and then I will pepper you with questions! Thanks for the information and good luck on your potential breeding. The next thing you know, YOU will be selling them at the Orange County Fair!
