Activity 9
Creating a Timeline, Baseball Style
Objective of the Lesson
Students will use their research skills to find the year that each of the 30 teams entered the league. This information will be gathered and used to create timelines.
Students will use their data to create one timeline for the American League and one for the National League. The timelines will then be used to assist the students in questions
generated by the teachers using the gathered student data.
Materials Needed
Lesson Plan Procedure
- Access the Internet using your Web Browser.
- Demonstrate the use of OPEN to access web sites for which addresses are already known. If students have completed Activities
5 - 7, this step should be self-explanatory.
- If students have the ability to gather this information on their own, have them list the names of the 30 teams and then search
the Internet for the years the teams started playing in the "Big Leagues."
- Using the information gathered, assist the students to put their data in chronological order sorted by league. This will make
it easier for the students to create their timelines.
- If possible, scan either photos or drawings of your timelines. Computerized/scanned
graphs may be saved as gif or jpeg files and sent directly to the BatterUp!
Project Coordinator. If scanning cannot be done, the Project Coordinator
will accept hard copies of student work.
