TNLI: Cases: There’s a Boy in the Girls Bathroom

Schools develop policies and structures based on certain generalizations about the student population.  But how should a school community react when students do not fit into those assumed categories?  When community norms and individual identities appear to be at odds with one another, can a student’s needs be compromised?

Discussion Questions

  1. What are the different power inequalities apparent in this case?
  2. What impact do you think allowing Sascha to use the girls bathroom would have on the school community?
  3. What should the principal be prioritizing in this situation?  How does this differ from the priorities of the school counselor?
