Teacher Grants: Humanities

The Mr. Holland's Opus Special Projects Program provides musical instruments and instrument repairs to existing K-12 school music programs that have no other source of financing to purchase additional musical instruments and materials. Eligibility: After-school music programs that are at least three years old or have a music-related umbrella organization that is at least three years.
Maximum Award: $8,000.

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy's grantmaking program for 2009 seeks to develop or expand projects supporting development of literacy skills for adult primary caregivers and their children.
Maximum award: $65,000.
Eligibility: organizations with current nonprofit or public status that have been in existence for at least two years on the date of the application.

Best Buy Awards for Interactive te@ch Programs

The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program provides opportunities for overseas experience. The program is open to educators and administrators with responsibilities for curriculum development in fields related to humanities, languages, and area studies.  Topics and host countries of the seminars vary from year to year.  All seminars are in non-western European countries.  Seminars are designed to provide a broad and introductory cultural orientation to a particular country (ies).  The program is geared towards those educators with little or no experience in the host country (ies) who demonstrate the need to develop and enhance their curriculum through short-term study and travel abroad.  There are nine seminars being offered for Summer 2009 with 16 positions per seminar, subject to the availability of funds.  Seminars take place from late June to mid-August for a duration of four to six weeks.
Award: round-trip economy airfare, room and board, fees, program-related travel within the host country (ies).  Participants are responsible for a cost share, $400.00.

The National Education Association's Books Across America Library Books Awards Program enables public school libraries serving economically disadvantaged students to purchase books.

Eligibility: Practicing pre-kindergarten through grade12 school librarians, teachers, or education support professionals in a U.S. public school in which at least 70 percent of the students are eligible for the free or reduced-price lunch program.

The Guitar Center Music Foundation's mission is to aid nonprofit music programs across America that offer music instruction so that more people can experience the joys of making music.
Maximum Award: $5000.

The American Councils for International Education Teachers of Critical Languages Program brings qualified EFL teachers with at least five years experience from China and Jordan to America where they teach Chinese and Arabic for an academic year in schools that offer the languages as a course of study. They are currently looking for schools to host them.

Barnes & Noble K-12 Grants
Through its stores, Barnes & Noble provides funding to local and regional efforts to promote literacy and the arts in K-12 education. Proposals should include a literacy or arts component that fosters both student achievement and community growth. Grant recipients must plan to promote the program with Barnes & Noble and be willing to work with the local store(s) on in-store programming. Potential applicants should visit a store in their area to receive more information. All nonprofits supporting the arts, literacy, or K-12 education are eligible to apply.

The Mockingbird Foundation (MFI) offers competitive grants to schools and nonprofit organizations in the area of music education for children. The Foundation is particularly interested in projects that encourage and foster creative expression in any musical form (including composition, instrumentation, vocalization, or improvisation), but also recognizes broader and more basic needs within conventional instruction.
