The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honor young people in grades 5 through 12 who have demonstrated exemplary voluntary service to their communities.
Maximum Award: $5,000 for honoree; $5,000 grant from the Prudential Foundation to a nonprofit, charitable organization of their choice.
Eligibility: students grades 5-12 who have conducted a volunteer service activity within the past year.

Under the Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA) the U.S. Department of State and IREX (International Research & Exchanges Board) announce a competition for middle and high school teachers from the United States to participate in a two-week professional exchange program.
Award: The program is fully funded and provides: visa support, round-trip domestic airfare, lodging and meals to attend the TEA U.S. Conference, round-trip airfare from the U.S. to the assigned country, emergency medical evacuation plan, and lodging and a daily stipend in the host country.
Eligibility: Secondary-level (middle or high school) teaching professionals with five or more years of classroom experience;teachers who spend 75% of their work week in a direct classroom instruction role in one of the following disciplines: English as a Second Language, English Language or Literature, social studies, math, or science; U.S. citizens; and teachers able to travel in spring or summer 2011 to one of the aforementioned countries.
Deadline: October 30, 2009 for travel in spring or summer of 2011. Selection will be made before January, 2010 and grantees will be expected to meet with their TEA International counterparts at a conference in the US in February or September, 2010.

The Conference on English Leadership (CEL) Award for Exemplary Leadership is given annually to an NCTE member who is an outstanding English Language Arts educator and leader. CEL members nominate an exceptional leader who has had an impact on the profession through one or more of the following: work that has focused on exceptional teaching and/or leadership practices (e.g., building effective department, grade level, or building teams; developing curriculum or processes for practicing ELA educators; or mentoring), contributions to the profession through involvement at both the local and national levels, or publications that have had a major impact.
Maximum award: a plaque, recognition on the CEL website and at the Sunday CEL Luncheon, a CEL luncheon ticket, and CEL registration. It may also include an invitation to be the luncheon speaker in a later year or to speak at the CEL Convention.

The Guitar Center Music Foundation's mission is to aid nonprofit music programs across America that offer music instruction so that more people can experience the joys of making music.

In2Books, the curriculum-based e-mentoring program from ePals, Inc., will be offered for free to some Title I schools. Students participating in In2Books select and read age-appropriate, high-quality books from a list compiled by a team of children's literature experts. The students are matched with carefully screened adult pen pals who read the same books as the students. After reading each book, students and their pen pals exchange thoughts about the important issues in the book via online letters. Teachers reinforce these activities in the classroom with related lessons and discussion.
Maximum award: the online program, books and professional development (valued at more than $500).
Eligibility: all 3rd-5th grade classrooms in Title I schools from any one district.

The American Councils for International Education Teachers of Critical Languages Program brings qualified EFL teachers with at least five years experience from China and Jordan to America where they teach Chinese and Arabic for an academic year in schools that offer the languages as a course of study. They are currently looking for schools to host them.

Barnes & Noble K-12 Grants
Through its stores, Barnes & Noble provides funding to local and regional efforts to promote literacy and the arts in K-12 education. Proposals should include a literacy or arts component that fosters both student achievement and community growth. Grant recipients must plan to promote the program with Barnes & Noble and be willing to work with the local store(s) on in-store programming. Potential applicants should visit a store in their area to receive more information. All nonprofits supporting the arts, literacy, or K-12 education are eligible to apply.

The Mockingbird Foundation (MFI) offers competitive grants to schools and nonprofit organizations in the area of music education for children. The Foundation is particularly interested in projects that encourage and foster creative expression in any musical form (including composition, instrumentation, vocalization, or improvisation), but also recognizes broader and more basic needs within conventional instruction.
